Had stayed at Berjaya Tioman some years back and enjoyed it. We decided to go back and take a short break of 4 days and 3 nights. We decided to spend a bit more and booked 2 sea view rooms. The rooms were large and pleasant.
Then a fire broke out and engulfed the main restaurant and we were woken up by the commotion about 3am and had to be evacuated to the lobby of the hotel till 6 am plus. The staff did well in helping the guests get comfortable as they started assigning us alternative rooms. We were then approached and offered alternative rooms, which we were glad to take as we were tired by then. Unfortunately, they turned out to be standard rooms at the back of the property, supposedly a temporary arrangement. We understand that the hotel may have its limitations and may not have other sea view rooms to offer us. But since we had already paid for the more expensive rooms, the least the hotel could do was to reimburse us with the difference or with a meal or activity voucher. Even though we brought this up to the reception, nothing came out of it. Anyway, we decided to let it rest.
Rooms: the sea view rooms are nice, not the standard rooms which are worn.
Food: the restaurant food were quite average, not 'restaurant standard.'
Snorkelling: you can snorkel in front of the hotel but you need to go past the dead corals and rocks.
Staff: they were generally polite and helpful but management needs improvement and better understanding of the hospitality industry.
