Claflin University, located in Orangeburg, South Carolina, was founded in 1869 by Alonzo Webster (1818-1887), a Vermont minister. Webster came to South Carolina to teach at the Baker Bible Institute in Charleston training African American ministers for the Methodist Episcopal Church (today the United Methodist Church). In 1869 he received a charter from the state of South Carolina to establish a college that would prepare freed slaves for the responsibilities of citizenship. The first charter banned discrimination among the faculty, staff and students, making the Academy the first South Carolina university open to all regardless of race. Nonetheless, all of the students at the Academy were African American.
The Branchville Railroad Depot is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The front of the structure now houses a museum/shrine of railroad memorabilia, including a caboose. It is open by appointment and children are welcome. Informal tours are led by John Norris, a retired railroad company executive. Admission is free but donations toward the upkeep of the museum are appreciated. Call (803) 707-1788 for information. The rear of the structure houses the Eatery at the Depot, which serves dinners on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. Reservations are recommended but not required. Ate here because we wanted something different from the regular fast food places. We have never been here but the employees help out with the ordering process. It's chicken burger was spectacular according to my sister I had the burger it was very fatty but in the end it did taste good. If your looking for something new and unique come and stop in. Oh yeah it's like a sonic- drive thru only.
