Very loud room where some fan was running outside. Even with earplugs I could still clearly hear the noise. Would not recommend this hotel

Noisy room and lack of kindness
The crew at the front desk were not helpful nor nice. I had an issue with a lot of noise from a generator in my room, and this completely ruined my sleep. Then when I asked to be moved, they moved me to a room where there was no isolation on the window, so I could hear people walking on the street. A really disappointing experience - not coming back, nor recommending it to anyone.

Not worth visiting, not value for money
My partner stayed at Freehand for 4 nights in October. Overall a very disapointing experience. But first the positive experiences; The staff was friendly and helpful and the gym was fine. However being rated 4 star the rooms did not at all live up to the standards that can be expected. The pictures listed on hotels.com do not show the real experience of the rooms, I would even say they are false. Starting from the beginning: At check in we were assigned a very small room, tiny window, we could barely move around the bed - not four star and not at all worth the ca 300 USD per night. We asked for a new room and were assigned a larger room on 3rd floor (presented as an upgrade). At 1 AM the hotel nightclub downstairs started their party. Our bed was shaking. We asked for a new room again. We were assigned a new room (also presented as an upgrade). This was on 5th floor. I was not acceptable condition, but after switching to room number three after being on a flight for 9 hours we just wanted to sleep. There's no ammenities in the rooms (except shampoo/soap), the last rooms windows had gaps to the outside so wind came directly in and the general condition and room cleanliness is not satisfying. Having been to three rooms, I can honestly say that the standard is not as shown in the pictures. Book somewhere else.

Too noisy to get any sleep at all. We were on the 15th floor. They provided ear plugs but they didnt help. Very unfortunate.

The hotel and the staff were nice. The only problem was that our lights in the room didn’t work. We were just very busy and we didn’t call for maintenance. However, I think that the rooms should be checked before guests check in.

The Freehand is in a convenient area to walk to many destinations and its also only one block from a subway line. The staff was all courteous and answered any questions we had. The rooftop bar is a nice option to spend time with a group. We also enjoyed the unique art and furniture in our room and the charm of the old renovated public areas.

It would be great to have a bit more storage or a slightly larger bathroom, but other than that, this is my favorite place to stay when we’re in Manhattan.

Cute hotel with tiny rooms. Perfect for the price if you’re traveling solo or with a partner and don’t plan on spending too much time indoors. Not a bad walk from Penn station and so close to Union Square.

Expedia or this hotel should have told us that the city was working on Lexington Ave at night and that the road was covered with metal planks that when cars and trucks drove over the planks, the noise created was unbearable. Sleeping was impossible.

Elevators are a little slow, but it is an older building and part of the aesthetic. The water in the restroom had a weird smell but nothing too overpowering; just when in the restroom. Staff are friendly, however, I called and left 2 or 3 voicemails trying to confirm my booking but no answer. Overall great stay.

Fun vibe, nice coffee table books in the room, cheap and easy food options right by hotel, also very nice restaurant in the hotel; rooftop bar was less exciting than they thought it was.

This hotel is a dump. Heat didn't work in the room, so they gave us a space heater. The room was advertised at 375 sq. ft. ("Corner King") and was maybe 200 sq. ft. at best. The front desk would do nothing, said to complain to the manager via e-mail which I did, and she never responded. No dresser or drawers for clothes (in an upgraded room!) The bathroom smaller than a closet. STAY AWAY!!!

Just ok. Small room which wasn’t a huge issue for us, but it was noisy. We could hear neighbors talking, people in hallway, and traffic outside. The restaurant looked great but we didn’t have time to eat. Not the worst we’ve stayed at but certainly not the best.

I don't think the room warranted the price. The room was quite small with a single bed which was fine for me. Although I believe I was charged the same price as larger rooms.

I highly suggest to clean windows. Bathrooms should be upgraded. Bathroom looked very outdated and looked gray. Street noise was extremely loud at night.
