The Acropolis stands about 1 km away and the ancient cemetery of Kerameikos is a few streets from the door, so Athens opens up the moment you step outside this apartment for four. Days move easily between museums, galleries and long lunches in Psyrri, with the metro a few minutes away for the airport, the port and the coast. Air conditioning keeps the summer where it belongs, and fast WiFi runs throughout, so you can answer a few messages in the morning and still be at the Agora before lunch.



The Space:

The living area is arranged for the way you actually spend time indoors, with air conditioning, a television and a work space that makes a morning of emails feel like no trouble at all, and a double sofa bed that turns the room over to two more guests when the evening ends. The kitchen is fully equipped and sits alongside the dining table, so cooking never means stepping away from the conversation, and you will find a Nespresso machine and a filter coffee maker, a toaster, a microwave, wine glasses and everything else you might need during your stay. The bedroom has a queen bed, air conditioning of its own and proper wardrobe space for longer stays. The bathroom is finished with a shower, hot water and toiletries ready for you on arrival. A washing machine and dryer mean you can pack light and stay longer, and a travel cot is available upon request for guests arriving with a baby. Linens, towels, a hairdryer, an iron and the everyday essentials are all in place, along with smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit, so the practical side is handled well before you arrive.

The Neighborhood:

Kerameikos and Metaxourgeio sit on the western edge of the historic centre, where nineteenth century houses, restored workshops and art galleries share the streets with wine bars and studios. The area suits guests who want the city on their own terms, with a well stocked supermarket, bakeries and everyday shops a couple of streets away and the Varvakios central market about 600 m off for fish, cheese, olives and spices.



The coast is close enough for an afternoon swim. Edem in Palaio Faliro lies about 7 km south, sandy and shallow with a seafront promenade behind it. Alimos, around 8 km away, is a long organised sand beach with sunbeds, water sports and a marina beside it. Glyfada, about 14 km down the coast, brings together sand, beach bars and the liveliest shopping on the riviera, while Vouliagmeni at roughly 20 km rewards the trip with clear deep water framed by pines.



Filopappou Hill, about 1.5 km away, offers pine shaded paths and the finest view of the Acropolis, and Mount Ymittos, some 9 km east, opens up walking trails, Byzantine monasteries and wide views over Attica.



Ancient Kerameikos, the burial ground of classical Athens, is about 300 m away. The Ancient Agora sits around 600 m off, the industrial halls of Technopolis about 800 m, the Acropolis about 1.2 km and the Acropolis Museum about 1.5 km. The National Archaeological Museum, roughly 1.5 km north, holds the greatest collection of Greek antiquities anywhere.



The Municipal Gallery of Athens occupies the old silk mill that gave Metaxourgeio its name, about 500 m from the door.



Evenings here belong to plates of meze and ouzo, natural wine poured in restored townhouses and street art that leads you toward Psyrri about 500 m away. Sunday mornings call for the flea market at Monastiraki, and the ferries from Piraeus put Aegina and Hydra within a day trip.

Getting Around:

Athens International Airport lies around 35 km east, and the blue metro line runs there directly from the nearest station, which also carries you the other way to the port of Piraeus, about 10 km southwest, where ferries leave for Aegina, Hydra, the Cyclades and Crete. A second station on the red line stands a similar distance away and takes you to Syntagma, the Acropolis and the coast at Elliniko. Bus and trolley stops stand on the main avenue nearby, and the intercity coach terminal for the rest of mainland Greece is about 3 km away. A car lets you make the most of Attica, from the temple at Sounio to the wine country around Nemea and the coast road south.



Other Things to Note:

You are staying in the part of Athens where the ancient city and the working city have always met, and it still feels that way at street level.
