For another family-friendly walk, stroll 1 mile to Queen Adelaide's Hill, with its scenic views across Windermere, especially at sunset. Venture 1.5 miles down to Bowness-on-Windermere to take a cruise out onto the beautiful lake, disembarking at jetties along the way if you choose. Pack a picnic and head 8 miles to the National Trust's Fell Foot, where you can meander beside the lake and paddle in the shallows. Plan a trip to Kendal, 8.5 miles from the cottage.

Here you can stoke up the wood burner, sink back into the deep caramel leather sofas and find a gripping film for everyone to enjoy on the Smart TV. The modern kitchen, where all your self-catering accessories are close to hand, adjoins the lounge. Open the door to the garden in here on summer days as you prepare the next delicious feast. Your bedrooms are arranged across the lower-ground and first-floor levels. Descend the slate staircase down to the first king-size bedroom, which has the luxury of an en-suite shower room. Another beautifully finished king-size can be found up on the first floor, together with a twin and the family bathroom. All three bedrooms have ample storage and a TV to ensure you can choose your own viewing.

Treat yourselves to afternoon tea out in the courtyard garden on fine days. This is also the perfect spot to sip a sundowner as each fabulous day away draws to a close. Unfortunately, this property has no parking, but guests can park in Broad Street Car Park, 0.5 miles by car or 350 metres on foot.
