Great restaurants and shops! Take a paddle boat tour, rent a boat or bring your own! We have plenty of room for trailer parking.

Cozy 3 bedroom 2 bathroom restored home complete with master spa bathroom and reclaimed wood floor from the 1850's!
Enjoy the river sounds from the sprawling back yard with a fire pit great for star gazing. Have a cup of coffee and watch the river go by from the rocking chairs on the front porch, and make family memories from the amazing screened porch.
As soon as you arrive you will know why the original settlers chose this location to start a village back in the 1850's. Stroll the quiet streets to admire the other historical buildings, or bike for miles on the Rustic Roads.

The location is great and this historic house is very cute. Easy access to the river and the quiet village of Rural with the Chain o’ Lakes nearby. The screened porch is a great space and the inside living room is a cozy space with built in cabinets that help keep the place organized and neat. A/C works well. The kitchen is spacious and reasonably stocked. Great to have a garage to use. The listing says it sleeps eight, but I think any more than six people is tight. For six people it’s reasonably comfortable. Note the only place to seat six for a meal is on the porch, which is ideal in moderate temps and daylight. If it’s very hot/cold, you’ll have to endure the temps and the lighting is dim if eating late. The one shower is huge and the other is so small you can’t bend over to shave a leg. We ended up mostly taking turns in the big shower so there’s a bit of shuffling around between bathrooms. This is our second year here and I will say the overall maintenance and cleanliness are slipping a bit. Nothing major that would ruin the stay, but it’s noticeable that things are getting broken and worn compared to last year and seem to not be repaired/replaced. Hopefully the owners give it some TLC since it’s a really charming place.

Charming retreat

The beds were comfortable, the kitchen was well supplied, the towels were plentiful, everything worked, and the interior style was cozy. Would have scored 5 stars except for some items needing attention:1. The smaller bathroom was not properly cleaned in our case, and the shower door did not completely close. 2. Our favorite spot, the screened in porch, was occupied by dead insects, spider webs, and other small debris that we cleaned up. 3. The dining chairs on the porch were soiled and need updating. 4. The house would be much more inviting if it received a new outdoor coat of paint and if the gutters were cleaned out. Nevertheless, we really enjoyed our stay and hopefully will return.

Fun & Unique Stay

This was a really fun, historic location. Communication with the host was excellent. I accidentally locked myself out of the house and they came to our rescue immediately. I also need to mention the number of towels! Haha We have traveled extensively and have never had so many towels avaliable. Sounds like a small thing, but it was really nice to have so many. The nearby water was beautiful and the neighborhood is very friendly.

Loved it!

Only stayed one night but we all wished we had more time to enjoy tubing and kayaking on the river. Great location with public access to the river only steps away from the house but far enough too that we still had privacy. Loved the screened in porch and sound of the small waterfall that was just across the road.

Quiet and Nice Home

Enjoyed our stay. Nice home in a very quiet neighborhood. Really loved the large porch and its furnishings. Enjoyed our walks along the Crystal River. Close to Waupaca and King with numerous shops and restaurants. Basic kitchen items. We enjoy cooking and there could have been more things in that regard, but we made it work. The owner was kind and quick to respond. It was a pleasant vacation.

Labor Day Weekend Kayak

We had a fantastic weekend vacation filled with kayaking, swimming, fires, good food and friends. We had two families- 8 people and the size of house was just right! Such a cute home and all the hometowns smells were awesome. The river in the front yard was so relaxing and quaint…. We felt blessed to be there and had a wonderful time. Shadow Lake swimming area was perfect for our boys who loved the high dive and the parents who needed cooling on the 100 degree Sunday we were there. The Red Mill home store and ice cream shop was so cool! Clearwater harbor was a yummy restaurant that welcomed dogs and had outdoor seating. Their blueberry mojitos was fantastic! I rate this family/friend vacation a 5 and would recommend this cute historic area to any wanderlust vacationers like us…

Girls weekend

Absolutely darling cottage in historic Rural. Everything was beautiful. We enjoyed morning coffee, dinner, drinks and lots of laughs on the screened in porch. Spent some time down at the river and lots of walks around the quiet neighborhood. The perfect nest for our reunion of 6.

Rural Stay

This is a historic home and at first glance it needed exterior paint which caused concern. However, once we went inside the house was clean and full of charm. The immediate reaction went away quickly and we had a great stay. No problem recommending this home to others and the property owners were very attentive to a couple of requests that came up.

Good Place

This is the 2nd time we've stayed here. Quant, small historic village. House is on creek. Nicely remodeled. Big screened porch for sitting and eating. Great backyard with big grill and firepit.

Rural house Waupaca

Lovely property, beautifully decorated - very inviting. We really enjoyed the screened in porch and fireplace on cool nights. Loved the Spa shower and jetted bath - very relaxing. The location is perfect for kayaking - we enjoyed kayaking the upper chain and then 1 mile of the Crystal river ending right at the Hyatt House. Nice neighborhood for walking.

The Perfect Quiet Getaway

I booked this for my brothers and parents and I to get some family time for a week. We LOVED this place! Phone signal was nearly non-existent, so it was good we had the instructions saved offline to unlock the door. Once we got on the wifi, the signal was strong. First of all, the place smells incredible! They really paid attention to that, between room aroma, the fresh, soft linens, and the soaps. The design is right out of Better Homes and Gardens - just clean, bright and simple, but no shortage on supplies. Everything we needed for coffee and cooking was available, including a nice big propane grill and hot dog sticks for the firepit. We spent all of our time either in front of the fireplace (at night) or out on the screened-in porch (during the day). The atmosphere was PERFECT. The little neighborhood of retirement/vacation homes was quiet and serene - though this was right after Labor Day when school started. I couldn't get enough of walking around it, admiring the historic houses, gardens, and quaint little creek ("river") that ran through the back yards. We even rented kayaks from the host - I wish we'd done more of that, because the one day we went (we put in just across the street), we had a blast. The host was consistently available for questions and recommendations, which were exactly what we'd hoped for. We even took the boat tour of the Chain of Lakes, which had a lot of cool info and gorgeous views. We're already talking about our next return. Will definitely stay here again! Many thanks to our host!

Excellent place to stay in historic area

Rented for family reunion. Very clean, recently renovated. Nice touches everywhere. Enjoyed spacious screened porch for dining and grill for food preparation and fire ring for after dinner s’mores with kids. Would highly recommend and plan to stay again in future

Family vacation

It’s a very nice house plenty of room for a family of seven. A nice two car garage which you can use close to the chain of lakes plenty a room in the backyard for games and a nice fire pit and all the restaurants that we ate at had good food.
