Off-Grid Treehouse! White Mountain National Forest
Summary:
This hike-in off-grid treehouse is for guests who want their vacation to feel legendary. Tucked into 56 acres in the White Mountain National Forest region, this primitive stay sleeps up to 4 with two twin beds, a futon, private firepit, hammock, and no Wi-Fi or cell service. You’ll have solar lighting, 12V solar power, a propane grill, private outhouse, and a water filtration system for drinking water. Think fireflies, owls, & cuddling by the fire. Strong “roughing it done right” energy!
The Space:
The Birdie is the most adventurous of the off-grid units at In the Trees.
It is primitive, playful, and deeply memorable - the kind of place that feels less like a rental and more like a story your group gets to tell later.
Sleeping setup: two twin beds, one lower-level futon, sleeps 3 max. It is best for 2 guests who want separate beds, or up to 3 adventurous guests who are comfortable with one simpler futon sleeping spot.
Inside, you’ll have bedding, solar lighting, limited 12V solar power, and a water filtration system for drinking water. Outside, you’ll have a private fire pit, propane grill, hammock, private outhouse, and the full woodland mood: trees, stars, trail shoes, bug spray, and absolutely no group-chat obligations.
This is glamping without the setup. No tent poles. No sleeping on the ground. No pretending you know where the rainfly goes. Just a rustic little treehouse, a firepit, a hammock, and a few days where the world gets farther away.
Why Guests Love It
• Primitive off-grid treehouse experience
• Hike-in arrival that feels like part of the adventure
• Sleeps up to 4 with two twin beds + lower-level futon
• Hammock for slow afternoons in the woods
• Private fire and propane grill (Propane canister required)
• Solar lighting and limited 12V solar power
• Water filtration system for collecting drinking water from the nearby stream
• Private outhouse - rustic, clean, and not shared
• Access to disc golf, hiking trails, and the adventure trail to our 5-story Summit Tower with 360-degree views
Guest Access:
The Birdie is a hike-in treehouse, and the walk is part of the adventure.
You’ll follow a steep, rocky, natural wooded trail to reach it - more “mini woodland quest” than casual sidewalk stroll. Wear sturdy shoes and plan to walk yourself in. We can help transport your belongings by utility vehicle during check-in, so you can focus on getting yourself up to the treehouse and feeling wildly proud when you arrive.
This is not the right fit for guests looking for easy, flat, drive-up access. It is very much the right fit for guests who hear “treehouse you hike to” and think, “Yes. Obviously!”
The Neighborhood:
In The Trees is set in Stoneham, Maine, in the White Mountain National Forest & Maine Lakes region. The property gives you built-in adventure, while nearby lakes, mountains, and trails make it easy to shape each day around the season.
Lakes, Trails & Nearby Adventure
Tucked into a beautiful pocket of Western Maine, our property is surrounded by forest, lakes, trails, ski areas, and small-town adventure.

Summer
Summer at The Birdie Treehouse is for fireflies, stargazing, grill dinners, disc golf, nearby lake days, and slow mornings in the woods. This is the season when it feels especially alive - green, warm, simple, and wonderfully far from normal routines.
Fall
Fall gives Birdie its most romantic personality. The leaves shift into gold and red, the air gets crisp, and the firepit becomes the obvious place to end the day. There is no heat, so fall guests should pack warm layers, cozy socks, and extra “I knew what I signed up for” energy.
May
May is green and rustic. Trails may be soft or muddy depending on weather. Bring practical shoes and a sense of adventure. The forest will bring the drama.
