if you can afford to stay somewhere else, stay somewhere else - i considered staying in my car over this place. this hotel is well below average and absolutely does not deserve anything above a 2 star rating.
* off the beaten path: far from everything, renting a car is a must, the driver charges a lot of money and only accepts cash, taxis and ubers don’t come here
* disconnect from reality: has wifi, but we lost power overnight which meant no wifi, no ac, no ability to contact anyone including people who work here
* staff is friendly: probably the only positive i have regarding this hotel, but it appears no one is here overnight, they have a very young front of the house staff, and learn some spanish because they know little english
* rooms are meh: big, has a fine bed, water is freezing to shower in, found a roach crawling around, will get cleaned upon request and when requested, there’s a 50/50 chance they’ll clean it
* beach is beautiful: black sand beach which is cool, public and across the street, few plastic beach chairs that feel like they might break underneath you, not good for swimming
* dog friendly: including strays which may sit right outside your door and bark all night long
costa rica is beautiful and if you’re staying at this hotel, you’ll see a lot of it because you will want to be here as little as possible.
