Casco Antiguo, also known as Casco Viejo, or the ‘old quarter,” is Panama City’s historic district. Considered a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site, the district dates back to 1673, and features vibrant plazas and picturesque brick-paved streets surrounded by colorful buildings. The area is ideal for walking, discovering history and enjoying a variety of fine cuisine. Come for some of the city’s best gastronomy, culture and photo ops, and stay to mingle with the locals in the heart of the nightlife scene.

Start your visit with a lively walk through the neighborhood. You’ll encounter some religious history at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Panama City located in the main square, Plaza Mayor, as well as the Church of San Jose, famous for its amazing golden altar. As you walk, make sure to stop at Plaza de Francia The plaza is also home to Las Bóvedas, a monument that was once used as a defense against pirate attacks.

Casco Antiguo is also home to several of the city’s top museums, including the Museo del Canal (The Canal Museum), and the Museo de la Mola, featuring the traditional textile art made by the Guna indigenous group. You’ll also find the iconic stone archway at Arco Chato, which is the remains of a church built by Dominican friars, and a beautiful photo opportunity.

Next, be sure to visit the Panama National Theater to see the stunning ceiling frescoes painted by Robert Lewis. On your walk, you’ll also get the chance to do some shopping, with opportunities to buy local crafts and visit high-end boutiques.

When you get hungry, you’re in luck. Casco Viejo is home to the heart of the gastronomy scene in Panama City. You’ll be met with the smells of grilled seafood wafting through its historic streets, and you’ll get to try some of Panama’s best dishes, as well as cuisine from all over the world made by premiere chefs. After dinner, check out the nightlife scene, or take in the sunset with views of the capital from one of the amazing rooftop bars overlooking the city.

Starting Point: Entrance of Casco Viejo:

The main entrance to Casco Viejo is often considered to be the area around the intersection of Avenida Central and Calle 11 Este, where the neighborhood's historic charm begins.
Head Southeast on Avenida Central:

From the entrance, start walking southeast along Avenida Central. This is one of the main streets running through Casco Viejo and is often bustling with activity.
Turn Right onto Calle 8 Este:

Continue on Avenida Central until you reach Calle 8 Este. Turn right onto Calle 8 Este. This street will lead you deeper into the historic district.
Pass by Iglesia de San Francisco de Asís:

As you walk down Calle 8 Este, you will pass by Iglesia de San Francisco de Asís, a prominent church known for its beautiful architecture.
Turn Left onto Avenida A:

After passing the church, turn left onto Avenida A. This street is parallel to the waterfront and has many colonial-era buildings.
Arrive at Plaza Catedral (Plaza de la Independencia):

Continue walking along Avenida A until you reach Plaza Catedral. The plaza is a central square and a key landmark in Casco Viejo. You will recognize it by the presence of the Metropolitan Cathedral (Catedral Metropolitana), which dominates the square.

The building is showcased in the property pictures, and the name is PH Casa Perez. This is a vibrant area surrounded by historical buildings, cafes, and shops, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists. The walk should take about 10-15 minutes, depending on your pace and how often you stop to admire the sights along the way.

To ensure a smooth start to your visit, we provide a complimentary set of toiletries upon your arrival. This includes essentials such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, and toilet paper. However, please note that these initial supplies are meant to get you started, and once they are depleted, we kindly ask our guests to purchase their own toiletries for the remainder of their stay. Please note that for long stays there is an aditional cleaning cost of $25 per week.

This is a lovely apartment located at the central area of the Historical Center, Casco Viejo, Next to one of the most important historical cathedrals in the country, please be aware of the bells of the church. It is important to mention that this area is near less privileged areas of the city, therefore we recommend you to approach locals with respect and caution. For your safety please avoid showing off expensive items or walking alone in empty areas.
