ARCHITECTURE
This house is representative of the Craftsman style architecture of the Arts & Crafts movement. It is one of the many diverse architecture styles found throughout New Orleans’ historic neighborhoods. LOWER GARDEN DISTRICT HISTORY
Following the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, an increasing number of Americans moved away from the French Quarter to begin their own residential neighborhoods. The Lower Garden District was the first, formed when French architect Barthelemy Lafon was hired to subdivide a large parcel of working farmland into a new Faubourg (suburb). Lafon envisioned a Classical neighborhood with the 3 acre triangular park, known as Coliseum Square, as its focal point. The streets he created around the park were named for the nine Muse’s of Greek mythology — Clio, Euterpe, Thalia, Melpomene, Terpsichore, Erato, Polymnia, Urania, and Calliope.
