Really nice place, but they ought to put a little money into a couch/sofa bed that doesn’t look and feel like it came from the 1950’s. That said, our only complaint. The bed was very comfy.

A great place to stay if you don't want the traditional lodge experience. Our host rented us her truck at an amazing rate and it was great to have a vehicle we could take to the beach! This is a unique part of the country.

This place is very close to King Salmon airport and host gave us pretty clear instructions and checkin process was very smooth. King Salmon does not have cell reception and internet connectivity nevertheless it was very easy to follow Tana’s instructions for checking

Great little place to stay. Set up really well and the hosts are amazing. Easy process and they are really helpful. Place was nice and clean and had everything we needed.

The owner was great to work with and the room was exactly as advertised. It worked great for our stay! We also rented her car on Turo which made getting to and from the airport easy. Thanks again for all your help!

The Grotto is amazing

Your hosts, Tana and Adam, are amazing as is this property if you are lucky enough to find yourself in King Salmon AK. Quiet and secluded and with all modern conveniences, another great stay. Thank you.

I would not say this place is worth the price. We had to book last minute (booked on Sunday and checked-in Tuesday) because we had a flight from Anchorage that landed at 8am and our water taxi to Brooks later that afternoon was cancelled due to weather. It was literally the only place available (we called every lodge/campground in King Salmon before booking). If you can stay somewhere else, you should. It might be slightly more than this place, but at least they'll provide transportation to/from the airport and respond to your messages. I messaged Tana twice asking if we could check in early or at least drop off our bags since we had 8 hours to kill between when we landed and check-in. She never bothered to respond. There are also six kids living above the unit, and you will absolutely hear them. It's a very small space and the futon is so uncomfortable just to sit on, that I cannot imagine sleeping on it. When you sit down you can literally feel the springs/bars underneath. This place is the definition of 'do the absolute least possible to earn money.' A few pros: the bed was comfortable and the room was dark.

Great stay in King Salmon for a good price.

Pros: nice clean place Great price Cons: need a car or taxi to get around ( it’s 3 miles to “ town” and there are bears around).

Great experience

Tana's place was perfect for my needs. It was spacious, clean and welcoming. The bed was super comfortable and the extras like snacks, coffee etc was a really nice touch. The host was responsive and helpful during my stay. It was very easy to get a taxi to and from the airport. I will definitely book again.

We enjoy the stays

The hostess is very nice. The only problem the secure code was incorrect. But she was available to help us. The driving direction is very good. There is no address to the house.

Blown away!

10/10 We were in town for a family friends funeral. We thought we'd minimize the hassle by renting a place instead of staying with them. When we booked the stay, we were honestly only expecting a couple bed cots, but the place had a full kitchen, living room area, bathroom with immediate hot water and a very large/comfortable bed. The snacks were a very nice touch. I'd recommend anybody to stay there, especially considering how kind the host was when we had to make sure we found the correct place. 10/10

When we arrived at The Grotto check-in was easy. Tana had contacted me days ahead of our arrival with all the check-in information as well as local information. The apartment was just what we needed for our stay in King Salmon/Katmai National Park. The apartment was clean, there was plenty of sleeping space, and we made us of the kitchen to cook some meals. Everything was easy to find in the apartment such as pots and pans, utensils, coffee pot, etc. Tana even has an iPhone that can be used during the stay because cell phone reception with anything but the local Alaskan carrier doesn’t work. I would stay in The Grotto again if I were ever to return to King Salmon. Great little apartment!

Great over night stay

Very clean property, check in and out was easy however the listing stated a grill and a hot tub, the grill was not located by the unit and after getting a return message the next morning we were alerted that the grill was on the upper deck next to the private property sign on the stairs. Spent a lot of money at grocery store to grill out and was not able to.

Overall the physical property was exactly as specified. The rooms were clean as were the linens and towels. What reduced my review were the following: 1) There was a great deal of noise above us, hammering, child noises and what sounded like moving furniture. 2) We were asked to leave the property "cleaner than we found it." That wasn't hard when it came to the dishes; one glass was cracked, all others were dirty as were the plates and the coffee pot. We ended up washing everything except any of the plates which we did not use. 3) There was no drain stopper to properly fill the sink and wash the dishes. We plugged the drain with paper towels to wash the dishes. 4) The couch was terribly uncomfortable. I cannot imagine if we had needed to unfold the hide-a-bed. 5) The sign for Bristol Bay was covered by bushes and only after driving by 3 times did we find it. A "Grotto" sign might have helped us.

Not quite as described

Chose this apartment as an alternative to more commercial lodging nearby on my way to Katmai for a backpacking adventure. The listing included a hot tub which was a key factor in choosing the location, but upon arrival and fruitless searching for the hottub, was told there is not one and there was a listing error. We were invited to use the family sauna in the main house area but that was not a great option for us. The apartment is also located under the main home where a large family lives, so the room was not quiet until all kids went to bed. I believe this was alluded to in the listing, but it cannot be overstated that this is not a quiet room. Finally, the ceiling fan in the bedroom did not work and it was quite hot in the room with no window and no air movement. Would likely choose another option for a future trip. I meant to post this much sooner but internet connectivity is very limited in the region And I didn’t have an opportunity at the time, and am just now recalling I hadn’t yet posted.
