We wanted peace and quiet, (a remote place to escape our busy lives for a short period), and WE FOUND IT!!
This wonderful vacation home was a perfect stay for our family of 4. It is certainly small, but in no way cramped.
This is living off the grid, but with enough amenities to make it comfortable. There is a refrigerator, a stove / oven and the availability of clean water for all your needs.
Some quick tips to help future guests:
- Know that this is not a hotel - you will be preparing your water for showering on the stove and using a battery operated handheld shower head out of a bucket of water to shower. You will be relieving yourself into a desiccating toilet.
- There is no electricity beyond the solar powered system used for lights and to power the refrigerator. As such, do not expect to power or charge any devices here.
- Do yourself a favor and wake up early and walk the property. The cool peace of the morning makes it so worth it, and the views are just awe inspiring. Also, it is a perfect time to make use of the gym equipment.
- The road to the home is rocky and dusty. While a 4 wheel drive worked great, I am sure a car could make it just as easily. Just take your time.
- As one might expect, the ground on the property abounds with spiky growth. While they will not poke through shoes, they are easily carried on shoes into the house. Walking around barefoot in the house can therefore be painful. Leave your shoes outside and sweep often. I would also recommend house slippers or something like.
- It would be a good idea to bring portable battery powered lanterns. There are solar lights, but we found the lights were not quite enough when sitting to play games in the "living room".
- Grocery shopping was convenient in nearby Kanab. We also made use of the coin laundry in town.
- While the property is quite remote, we were still able to get a cell phone signal while there. We found it is best a little higher up on the property. (Our carrier is Verizon)
- We were within an hour of Zion National Park and many other great sites, yet far enough away from everything to really gain an appreciation of God's wonderful creation.
In summary, we highly recommend this home. Living off the grid for this brief period allowed us the escape we needed while inspiring a sincere appreciation for so many things we too often take for granted. It was a good reminder of how blessed we truly are.
