"This was a wonderful stay. Everyone was smiling, welcoming and very helpful. A few staff spoke English well but most spoke only very little or none. Breakfast was sometimes served at the table and other times it was a buffet. Both were very good. The guides working for the hotel were very skilled and pleasant to talk to. If you want real adventure ask the manager to arrange a trip to Maria Correia waterfall (it is not on the normal list of daily activities - you have to ask for it. It's a 5 hour trek and it's hard but the waterfall is incredibly beautiful). Dinner was always good but not incredible. Except for the coffee pudding with red wine glaze - THAT was incredible! Service was always great - fast and polite. The room was neat and clean. The location of the hotel is breathtaking. Just fantastic! You're surrounded by ancient rainforest on all sides, with many different birds calling from everywhere. The hotel sits on top of a mountain, so you can see the bay from the terrasse. Truly special. Most unique view from a hotel I have ever experienced.
There was a gap under the door, which meant that ants and spiders came in all the time. Not a big problem but it was a little annoying, especially with the big spiders...
The blankets had small stains of what looked like blood on them. I experienced this two times. I'm sure the staff would have changed it if I had asked for it, but I didn't. Communication via e-mail with front desk was hard, especially if you want bespoke trips."
